Dr. Surakiart
attended the UN World Summit and visited Washington D.C.
9-30 September.
In September, Dr. Surakiart joined the Prime Minister
in attending the 2005 World Summit in New York. Whilst
participating in the Interactive Roundtable Session of
the High-level Plenary Meeting (HLPM) of the General Assembly
on behalf of the Prime Minister, Dr. Surakiart emphasized
the importance of innovative and effective UN reform
In his address to the G-77 Ministerial Meeting, Dr. Surakiart
stressed that sustainable development would only result
from a partnership between all stakeholders. Dr. Surakiart
also attended the launch of the Clinton Global Initiative
and joined the Prime Minister at the Informal Meeting
of Leaders on Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation for
Peace, the High-level Meeting on Financing for Development,
and the 2nd ASEAN-UN Summit.
Whilst in New York, Dr. Surakiart took the opportunity
to hold productive bilateral meetings with over a hundred
statesmen and stakeholders from all over the world.
He discussed major international issues including the
UN reform process, the Millennium Development Goals
and international peace and security.
Dr. Surakiart joined the Prime Minister in a meeting
with President Bush at the White House in which they
discussed Thai-US relations and issues of international
concern. Dr. Surakiart returned to Washington D.C. later
in the month to meet with the President of the World
Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, as well as leading figures in
the US administration.

European Visits: France and
Denmark.
Dr. Surakiart visited Sweden, Finland and Norway between
27 August-1 September. He discussed questions of UN
reform and prospects for the 2005 World Summit with
the Prime Ministers and Ministers of Foreign Affairs
of Sweden, Finland and Norway. He also exchanged views
on peace and security, crisis management and management
reforms in the UN with Mr. Hans Blix, Chairman of the
Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission (WMDC) and Mr.
Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Finland. His visits
were also an opportunity for him to update the Scandinavian
countries on progress made in for the rehabilitation
of areas in Thailand affected by the December 2004 tsunami
as well as cooperation towards establishing a tsunami
early warning system for the Indian Ocean and Southeast
Asian region, to which Dr. Surakiart has always placed
high importance.

Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart called on Finnish Prime
Minister Matti Vanhanen at his office. They had a productive
discussion on the UN reform process and Finnish role
in peace-building in Aceh. The Prime Minister conveyed
his Government's appreciation for Thailand's kind assistance
rendered to the Finnish people who were inflicted by
the tsunami tragedy.
Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart called on Swedish Prime
Minister Goran Persson at his office. They had a productive
discussion on global issues including the UN reform
process. The Prime Minister will co-chair the High Level
Plenary Meeting (HLPM) of the UN. The Prime Minister
conveyed Sweden's appreciation for Thailand's kind assistance
rendered to Swedes who were inflicted by the tsunami
tragedy.
Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart called on Norwegian
Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik at his office. They
had a productive discussion on international developments
including the UN reform process. The Prime Minister
conveyed Norwegian's appreciation for Thailand's kind
assistance rendered to Norwegians who were inflicted
by the tsunami tragedy.
